SHINKENCHIKU… THE NEW PLANTED CITY
INTERNATIONAL DESIGN COMPETITION

Client… Yoshioka Foundation Location… Theoretical Date… 2008 Author… Adriana Monroy / Paul Cremoux

We cannot think of a “green-city” without considering the failed proposals that have already been tried. Inefficient use of energy is a threat to the sustainability of our planet.
The idea of a Planted City is to create an urban net that serves as a transition between rural and urban areas. This model proposes a cultivating production area which would supply a high percentage of the required food. We have classified the green areas in three categories: private production areas (private work and consumption); common production area (common manufacture); and areas with ecosystems with filtration units.
The Planted City also proposes to close the cycles related to garbage in two categories: biological and industrial.
Related to the Nine Square Grid, we have simply used 2 main axis that divide the area strategically to create private and public plots of land. The constructed areas and the open spaces along with the different levels establish an urban design of a unit that can be reproduced.
Each unit is a puzzle piece. The assemble of the pieces describes the final pattern of the Planted City.
